Blackout expert knows: – Why you need garbage bags as a precaution

Date:

Many problems and causes that can lead to a power outage are piling up this winter. Besides the power shortage and the cooler weather, sabotage is still a big factor of uncertainty, as we saw with Nord Stream 1 and 2, the president of the Austrian Association for Crisis Prevention, Herbert Saurugg, explains in the conversation on krone.tv with Jan Paschen. Even planned power cuts, as governments currently plan to prevent a blackout, would have “effects that create a rat’s tail of trouble.”

A stress test was carried out on the power supply at the beginning of November. The core, according to energy minister Leonore Gewessler: the situation is “extremely challenging, but remains manageable”. “If there is a threat of area closure, I fear that these models will no longer be able to cover the extent of the damage,” says Saurugg. “The effects would be huge, which we as a society are not really prepared for.” In addition to the supermarkets, the entire industry, including the food industry, has come to a standstill. For example, cows cannot be milked, pigs cannot be fed, and the milk cannot be processed. “Without precautions, it will be a bad surprise,” says Saurugg.

‘Without precautions it will be a nasty surprise’
But you don’t always have to worry, says Saurugg. Much depends on ourselves. “If we take precautions and also ensure that the environment is not affected, then you can live more relaxed. But if we expect the federal army to come and restrain us, it won’t happen.” Nobody can help us. According to the expert, it is especially important: “Without precautions, it will be a nasty surprise.”

You can save a lot of effort if you approach the objective and take basic precautions. “I rarely need an emergency power generator,” says Saurugg. A supply of drinking water and food for 14 days and special medicines, if you need them, are the most important in crisis prevention. Also useful: lamps (no candles because of the risk of fire), knowing where the nearest emergency center is, and garbage bags to store perishables because the garbage collection is no longer running, and cash.
