Paul Vecsei, the editor-in-chief of the Wiener Zeitung, is very direct in the TV interview with Gerhard Koller: “Politicians have more or less refused to enter into a dialogue with the representatives of the reaction. The federal government went into hiding and the Greens turned out to be the gravediggers of the Wiener Zeitung.”
A violent wave of layoffs is currently underway, also because politicians have broken all promises about the continued existence of the Wiener Zeitung. Due to the end of the daily print edition, a beacon in domestic quality journalism must now die at the end of June. “The oldest daily newspaper in the world is being liquidated,” says Vecsei. The mood among the staff is therefore gloomy and the situation extremely bitter.
In the video above you can see a lot of historical details about the newspaper’s more than 300 years of existence.
