Almost 70% voted for conviction, a lower percentage than in 2019, 13% with certain doubts and about 20% for the least bad option.
More than half of the people who abstained in the May 28 elections in Euskadi they decided before the campaign electorally and more than 20% on the same election day. Almost 70% voted out of conviction, a much lower percentage than in 2019; 13% with certain doubts and about 20% who believed that this was the least bad option.
These are the data collected in a post-election survey of the last municipal and regional elections conducted by the Sociological Prospecting Office of the Basque Government between 29 and 30 May 2023.
The majority had determined their behavior before the election campaign, but more and more are deciding in recent days. 55% and 51% of those who abstained in the regional and municipal elections, respectively, decided to do so before the start of the campaign, 13% and 16% during the campaign, 7% and 5% on the day of reflection and 21% and 23% on the same day of the election. In other words, 41% and 44% respectively of those who abstained from voting decided to do so in the two weeks leading up to regional and municipal elections. In 2019 these were 36% and 40%.
The conviction in the votes cast has decreased compared to 2019, since then there were 77% and 69% who declared to have voted convinced. Almost all the people who went to vote (95% in general assembly elections and 94% in municipal elections) are satisfied with the votes cast, as is usual with all election calls.
Of those who abstained from voting, 17% confirmed that, given the result, they would have preferred to vote in municipal elections and 16% in municipal elections. In 2019, these were 11% and 10% respectively.
Most consider the results of 28M to be positive, although less than in 2019. 60% rate the results of the forales in their territory very or quite positively, compared to 21% who rate them very or quite negatively.
With regard to those of the municipalities, 59% rate their municipality’s results very or quite positively and 24% very or quite negatively. The assessment of the results is less positive than in 2019.
58% of the Basques indicate that they have been very or very interested in the municipal and regional elections on 28 May. Interest is similar to that of the 2020 regional elections (53%), and less than that of the 2019 municipal and general assembly elections (72%).
