Wien Energie will lower prices, Alderman Peter Hanke (SPÖ) announced on Wednesday. Details will be announced at the end of June. It will be a “marked improvement” for existing, new and business customers, he promised. The exemption should amount to “three-digit million”.
“We see a flattening of the curve in the international energy markets,” Hanke explains the move. He recently announced that there will be a one-off discount for district heating customers. These were hugely affected by the price increases and faced roughly a doubling of regulation. The discount should save an average household about 80 euros.
New package for everyone
According to reports, the new, additional package will not only consist of a one-off payment, but will also have consequences for all forms of energy. According to the city government, it should be a “permanent development” – at least if the international price situation allows it, he added.
Transition to alternative energy systems
Together with housing councilor Kathrin Gaal, environmental councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (all SPÖ) and NEOS climate spokesperson Stefan Gara, Hanke also presented further details about the announced forced switch from gas to alternative energy systems. District heating plays an important role here. The city has now selected four pioneer areas where the expansion of district heating needs to be accelerated. They are located in the 2nd, 6th, 9th and 16th districts.
First of all, the building structure must be analyzed and the technical implementation checked. In 2026, a connection will be prepared for more than 200 buildings. The owners will be contacted in the coming months to discuss further steps. Information meetings are organized here. In general, one would like to strategically promote the expansion of district heating in the future – and no longer make it primarily dependent on individual building projects, as was emphasized.
50 million euros will flow to a new project
According to the CEO, Michael Strebl, Wien Energie is investing around 50 million euros in the pioneering area project. The district heating network is currently 1,300 kilometers long. This supplies 440,000 households and 7,800 large customers.
600,000 households converted in 2024
In total, some 600,000 households must have switched to alternative systems by 2040. In addition to district heating, geothermal energy is also a special point of attention here. In addition, according to Wien Energie, reference was made to the largest heat pump in Europe, which is currently being built in Simmering. It should be an essential part of ensuring that district heating in Vienna is generated in a climate-neutral way in the future, it was explained on Wednesday.
