“The coalition in Klagenfurt burst because of the Miklautz case,” it said surprisingly from the Carinthian capital on Friday evening. However, for the time being there was little information. What does that mean for the city politics of Klagenfurt?
“I don’t know anything, nobody talked to me,” is the answer of Christian Scheider, mayor of Klagenfurt. This message is not from him, “it probably comes from another party”.
Miklautz vortex as the cause
According to SPÖ party leader Philipp Liesnig, the reason for the dissolution of the working group was that Scheiders was on his own in the Jost/Miklautz case. The background to this is the now closed public prosecutor’s office against the Carinthian journalist Franz Miklautz.
“Scheider has broken the AG agreement,” says Liesnig. Internally, everyone agreed with this decision, but National Council member and executive club president Philip Kucher made it public in an interview.
Scheider defends himself: “I am obliged to investigate the information. That was a representation of the facts.” How to proceed?
“Nothing Changes”
“So far we have had nothing but a working agreement. If it is dissolved, then a game of free forces will arise,” says Scheider: “Otherwise nothing will change. For me the least – because I have been directly elected until 2027.” Liesnig also sees it this way: “The city council is the highest body, it will be a game of free forces”.
Lavish salaries and overtime discovered
In his investigation, Miklautz had discovered salaries and generous overtime at Klagenfurt town hall using internal documents. This had led to investigations at the Klagenfurt public prosecutor’s office for contributions to violating professional secrecy and his mobile phone and laptop were seized.
The case sparked outrage and was criticized as an attack on press freedom. The Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office, in agreement with the Ministry of Justice, finally issued an instruction to stop the investigation.
