Municipal council chairman Alfred Riedl (ÖVP) announced his resignation on Thursday with effect from February 25. He explained this in a letter to the General Secretariat and the members of the federal administration.
“This means that the election of the new president at the meeting of the Federal Council of Governors on February 26 can take place in accordance with the statutes,” said Secretary General Walter Leiss. In other words, Riedl arrived just a few days before he was voted out. He had already been suspended from office after controversial real estate transactions. The politician is accused of making over a million euros from the sale of real estate in Grafenwörth (Lower Austria). He is also mayor there.
Johannes Pressl follows
Riedl emphasized that everything was legal. His successor has already been chosen: Johannes Pressl, mayor of Ardagger (Lower Austria), will be elected next week as the new chairman of the municipal association. He is the only candidate and on Thursday already demanded an extra billion from the financial settlement for the municipalities.
The Austrian Association of Municipalities was founded in 1947 as a local interest group. Almost all municipalities and cities in this country are members and therefore about 70 percent of the population is represented.
