The SPÖ Lower Austria elected its new party leader Sven Hergovich with 96 percent. There was broad agreement with neofederal party leader Andi Babler and former state party leader Franz Schnabl. The declaration of war against the black-blue system was finally reinforced.
New times for the comrades in Lower Austria: There was a full house with 750 people at the SPÖ state party conference in St. Pölten. Due to lack of space, even participants had to be turned away. There were many guests, but few words about the internal dispute with neofederal party leader Andreas Babler. Actually, the state party had put pressure on its rival Hans Peter Doskosil.
“The Red Gsindl Lives”
Mayor Matthias Stadler, as the “owner” of the Glanzstoff Konerei, recalled that many great social democrats came from there. Before Sven Hergovich was elected new boss, predecessor Franz Schnabl stepped on stage and supported the 34-year-old. At the time, Hergovich did not think so smoothly about the past: he accused the ÖVP of deliberately breaking off coalition negotiations and looked at other states with black-blue coalitions. Because the SPÖ’s demands would have been easy to implement. “The red Gsindl is alive! You can count on us again,” says the governor’s self-proclaimed “Control Provincial Councillor”.
First major performance
The new SPÖ party leader, Andreas Babler, made his first major appearance at a party event at this state party conference. There was no sign of mutual resentment because Hergovich had spoken out in favor of the Babler rivals at the federal party conference. Babler also showed humor: “I’ve become very careful when it comes to congratulating election victories.”
A spirit of optimism with 326 votes
He was the only candidate to take part in the vote: 339 of the 341 eligible voters cast their vote. 326 voted for Hergovich, that’s 96 percent. After Babler and Hergovich’s mutually reinforcing speeches, election official Christian Farthofer identified a spirit of optimism and that together we are on the right track. “From here, this is now a declaration of war on the black-blue system,” Hergovich announced.
