The controversial gold Bösendorfer grand piano has finally been thrown out of parliament. Instead, his black successor took his place, the House of Representatives confirmed on Monday. The Bösendorfer Grand Piano 185 VC is therefore a cheaper entry. A final purchase decision has not yet been made.
The rental fee of 3,000 euros per month, for which the chairman of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) had the gold-plated grand piano set up in the special “Secession” version in the reception room of the renovated parliament, was heavily criticized by the opposition. There was also a sensational protest by an activist.
A simpler model was preferred
After much criticism, a purchase of the often unloved instrument was considered. In May it was then decided to replace the gold-plated grand piano with a simpler model.
The list price for the new grand piano is 92,780 euros. However, since it is an exhibit, any purchase should cost less. The purchase of the golden grand piano would have cost about 140,000 euros.
The idea for the golden piano came from an architect
Theophil Hansen, the architect of parliament, had instruments designed for the Bösendorfer company and was originally said to have designed a gilded model for the House of Lords. However, it never came to that.
