The Government of Spain has rejected to the Director of the National Intelligence Center (CNI), Peace Stephenfor listening to various political representatives, as CNI sources have confirmed to Europa Press.

After just over two years as director of the CNI, Esteban has been fired amid controversy over the espionage with the Pegasus programboth in the case that affects independence leaders such as the theft of data denounced by the Spanish Government from the mobile phones of the Head of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchezand the Minister of Defence, Margaret Oaks

Last Thursday he appeared in Congress for the Commission of reserved costswhere, despite being held behind closed doors, he was found to justify the espionage by the CNI on 18 Independentistas, including the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Pere Aragonés, who granted the judicial authorizations granted by the liaison judge of the Supreme Court .

However, his name was soon pointed to taking on responsibilities by formations such as ERC, Junts or even United We Can, which have avoided naming but pointed to the CNI. Faced with this, he had gained the support of opposition parties (PP, Vox and Ciudadanos), who praised his “professionalism” and state sense.

Esteban, who held the rank of Secretary of State, had also gained public support from the Secretary of Defense, who had complained that she had to endure “stoic” accusations that, according to Robles, were not real.

Paz Esteban was born in Madrid in 1958 and has a degree in philosophy and letters from the Autonomous University of Madrid. In 1983, he joined the then Center for Superior Defense tion (CESID), which became the current CNI in May 2002 after being involved in another random wiretapping scandal in the 1990s that even affected the Royal Household.

After fulfilling various duties in the institution, Esteban was appointed General Secretary of the CNI in 2017. And in 2019, after the director of the center, General Félix Sanz Roldán, was transferred to the reserve, she held the position of director on an interim basis. basis until her official appointment in February 2020, becoming the first woman to lead the institution and also the first person “of the House” to reach its peak.

This Friday, the CNI celebrated its 20th anniversary and one of Esteban’s projects was to commemorate the date with a series of events that would allow the institution to open up to society, although the spy scandal caused all predictions to be canceled .
