The plenary inauguration session to elect the new deputy general of Gipuzkoa began at 9:30 a.m. during the general assemblies. Besides surprises, the jeltzale Eider Mendoza will take over from Markel Olano, with the support of PSE-EE and PP.
The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council elects its new deputy general today in a plenary session that began at 9:30 a.m. during the General Assemblies. Eider Mendoza (PNV) and Maddalena Iriarte (EH Bildu), winner of the 28 million elections, have run to become the first woman to hold the most responsible position in the Provincial Council. Barring surprises, it will be the jeltzale candidate who, thanks to the support of the PSE-EE and PP, takes over the baton. Voting starts at 6 p.m.
The first to speak was Mendoza, who during the legislature contacted the rest of the political groups to “cooperate” and defended the roadmap included in the agreement with the socialists. Likewise, the jeltzale candidate has insisted that “it is not permissible to delegitimize the consensus reached within democratic rules”.
In her speech, which lasted an hour and a quarter, the aspiring general deputy pledged to lead a regional executive whose hallmarks will be “proximity, feminism, innovation and a long-term vision.” “If I am appointed deputy general, I will form the government Gipuzkoa needs, with a long-term vision, progressive in the social field, innovative in the economic field and close in the way things are done,” she specified.
In addition, he has indicated that he will not be an “office legislator” and will be “close” to the elderly, young people, enterprising families, migrants and all citizens in order to “ensure the citizens’ quality of life and promote Gipuzkoa as one of the most attractive places in Europe for the development of a life project, immersing yourself in the values of Gipuzkoan society itself: solidarity, respect, community and commitment”.
The jeltzale candidate also appreciated “the soundness” of the “shared trajectory” developed by the PNV and PSE-EE over the past eight years and thus “in conjunction with the path traveled and with the firmness conferred by the programmatic agreement that has been achieved with the PSE-EE”, has asked for “the confidence” of the General Assemblies to be a general deputy. He then outlined the “roadmap” with 13 lines of work on which the government’s agreement with the socialists is based.
