Date:

The Lehendakari, who visited the Savaghju-Vivariu Linguistic Immersion Center in Corti, emphasized that both Corsica and the Basque Country “have their own language and have a desire to preserve this cultural heritage”.

the lehendakari, Inigo Urkulluduring his official visit to Corsica, demanded the support of minority language institutions so that the peoples also survive, given the risk that they “disappear in a phenomenon of globalization due to the loss of their languages ” .

Urkullu, who has visited the Language Immersion Center Savaghju-Vivariuin Corti, during his second and last day of official visit to Corsica, emphasized that both Corsica and Euskadi “have their own language and have a desire to preserve this cultural heritage”.

“We share respect for linguistic diversity and we understand linguistic plurality as a great asset,” he assured.

After pointing out that they are aware of the need to “invest in minority languages in order to effectively respect the language rights of all people”, he recalled that the Basque Government and the Community of Corsica are working on the development of an “Exchange Protocol of experiences and information” related to the linguistic standardization process.

As he explained, this protocol is one of his priorities. In addition, he pointed out that the “Action Plan for the Promotion of the Basque Language” contains international agreements with the aim of increasing cooperation with other agents.

The lehendakari has reminded that the Apr 8, 2020 The French National Assembly passed the law for the protection and promotion of the heritage of regional languages, without the support of the French government and with broad support from the opposition.

In the field of education, the new law opened the door to the language immersion model for minority languages (Breton, Basque, Occitan, Corsican) in public centers, as well as the government subsidy of private bilingual schools.

Anyway, 60 MPs appealed to the Constitutional Council, which declared it partially unconstitutional. In its decision of 21 May 2021, the Constitutional Council did not allow language immersion, as its application in public schools relegated French to the background.
