According to a study by the scientific services of the German Bundestag, social benefits for asylum seekers vary considerably in Europe. The monthly amount that asylum seekers receive cannot differ more in the individual countries.
Third-country nationals in ongoing asylum procedures can receive around EUR 426 per month in France, EUR 425 in Austria and EUR 410 per month in Germany. So in Great Britain there is the equivalent of about 210 euros, in Sweden 180, in Greece 150 and in Hungary only 60 euros.
Classification only “partially meaningful”
The “Welt am Sonntag” (WamS) first reported on the paper that scientists in the Bundestag had prepared on behalf of the CSU MPs. It examines the basic security provided by the state to nationals and foreigners and the associated access to health care in nine European countries. However, it is also pointed out at the beginning of the study that a comparison is only “conditionally meaningful” because of the different social systems and the different classification of immigrants.
The “WamS” quotes Konstanz immigration law expert Daniel Thym as saying that there is a special German characteristic of continuing to pay social benefits to foreigners who are forced to leave the country. In France, for example, rejected asylum seekers must leave the country as quickly as possible, according to Bundestag experts, and payments would be stopped.
The scientific services of the Bundestag research and analyze certain topics on behalf of individual members of parliament and parliamentary bodies and produce documentation, elaborations or reports on this subject.
