Palestinian aid – Austria again releases UNRWA funds

Date:

Now the Austrian federal government has also released the funds that were blocked following terror accusations against the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA. After a thorough analysis of the action plan presented by the organization, “we will release the funds again to UNRWA,” the Foreign Ministry said in Vienna on Saturday.

The total is 3.4 million euros and the first payment will reportedly take place in the summer. According to the information, part of the Austrian funds will be used in the future for improved internal control mechanisms at UNRWA. “A lot of trust has been lost. Cooperation with UNRWA can and will only be continued in the medium and long term if the reforms lead to corresponding results,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs further emphasized.

UN investigation contradicts Israeli allegations
Most countries that halted payments to the UN Palestine Relief Agency have now released the blocked funds. UNRWA personnel have been accused by Israel of involvement in the October 7 Palestinian massacres in Israel. A UN investigation concluded that the agency is broadly maintaining its neutrality well, but that improvements are needed.

The Foreign Ministry stressed on Saturday that support for the suffering Palestinian people in Gaza and the region had increased despite the blocked funds. Since October 7, Austria has made €32 million in humanitarian aid available to other international aid organizations.
