According to the chairman of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), the new black Bösendorfer wing in parliament cost between 60,000 and 70,000 euros.
The model replaced the controversial golden piano. Since the purchase price was less than 100,000 euros, there was no need to advertise it, Sobotka said in the ORF program “Hohes Haus”.
exhibition
The new wing is an exhibition, says Sobotka. Therefore, it came out a little cheaper than the list price. The previous piece had also caused discussions because of the high rental costs of 3,000 euros per month. Unlike its predecessor, the new black grand piano is not intended as an art object, it can also be moved to other rooms. At the same time, the chairman of the National Council admitted that he had misjudged the situation when purchasing the golden wing.
Security concept is being evaluated
Parliament’s security concept is currently under evaluation after a man entered the empty government bench. This person was normally registered as a visitor, but then entered the plenary hall directly behind a club employee. According to Sobotka, the concept is fundamentally correct.
As a first measure, it was decided on Thursday that the proof of identity required to gain access to the plenary hall must be visibly worn – for example by club employees. This does not apply to MPs themselves, according to the request of the APA of the parliamentary department. They do not have such an ID, but a PIN code and are still known. According to Sobotka, this measure should be sufficient for the time being.
