The EU and Tunisia signed an agreement this weekend to step up cooperation on migration. The cooperation is welcomed by the federal government in Vienna. Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized on Monday that this was a “longstanding demand” from Austria.
Therefore, “the right path the Commission is taking”, Nehammer declared on the sidelines of a summit with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in Brussels. But it is also clear that the EU “must continue on this path”. It is important that partnerships are formed on an equal footing. A “win-win situation” is needed, so the North African countries should benefit from entering into a partnership with Europe, said the ÖVP leader.
EU funds to crack down on people smugglers
In the case of Tunisia, this involves financial support for the ailing country in North Africa of up to 900 million euros. In exchange for the financial aid, Tunisia will take stronger action against people smugglers and illegal crossings to reduce the number of people leaving for Europe.
Tunisia is one of the main transit countries for migrants on their way to Europe. In Italy in particular, the arrival of thousands of migrants has been discussed for some time. This year, migration figures via the Mediterranean route have increased enormously.
