“There must be many more and constructively good arguments,” says rhetoric and communication expert Jürgen Eisserer in the krone.tv conversation with Jana Pasching. “The willingness to discuss openly is sorely lacking these days.” The wrong search for harmony keeps conflicts from being resolved where they would make sense. Politicians sometimes engage in emotionally charged micro-discussions to divert attention from the real issues.
In our society and in politics there are many subjects on which one can disagree. From climate protection to gender or the 32-hour working week. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen had warning words on Wednesday. According to Van der Bellen, the “normal people” of Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), the “people” of Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) and the “people” of Andreas Babler (SPÖ) would lead to populism and division. A discussion has erupted.
Eisserer warns against putting every word on the golden scale. “There are half a million words in our vocabulary.” Of course the phrase “normal thinking people” could be phrased differently, of course there would be another term for “norm” or “normal”. However, Eisserer warns against hypersensitivity. “Because we’re in a kind of meta-discussion. We’re looking at the terminology rather than the real cause. Where we want to go as a society is what politics should be about, not how we talk to each other.”
How to properly argue and what questions to ask yourself is shown in the video above.
