While Russia has reportedly long been using cluster munitions in Ukraine, which have been banned by many states, those who were attacked are now likely to fight back with the same weapons. According to one report, Ukraine apparently wanted to “break open” Russian positions.
According to a Washington Post report (Thursday), Ukraine has started using US-sourced cluster munitions in its defensive battle against Russia. As the newspaper reported, citing unnamed Ukrainian government officials, the aim is to attack Russian barricades that are delaying the counteroffensive that has begun.
When asked by dpa, the US Department of Defense initially declined to say whether it had information that the cluster munitions were already being used. There was no official confirmation or denial from Ukraine.
Many duds endanger the population
Cluster munitions are rockets or bombs that explode in the air above the target, releasing many small explosives. It is especially controversial because a significant part of it does not explode, but remains on site as duds, endangering the population. More than 100 countries have banned its use, including Germany.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has already threatened to use cluster munitions if Ukraine uses them. However, many experts are convinced that the Russian side has long been using such ammunition.
Responsible use, but is it possible?
The Pentagon confirmed last week that the cluster munitions promised by the US shortly before had been delivered to and arrived in Ukraine. The US government repeatedly emphasizes how difficult it was for President Joe Biden to make the decision.
Ukraine has promised not to use cluster munitions for attacks on Russian territory. According to its own statements, it does not want to use them against civilian institutions. Russia has been waging an offensive war against its neighbor for 17 months.
