The PP has denied that there was an agreement with EH Bildu and has explained that it acted as in previous legislatures, i.e. divide the presidencies among the opposition. Faced with criticism, which the popular group attributes to “nervousness on the last day of the campaign”, they have resigned.
The PP has relinquished the chairmanship of the committees of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council that had fallen to it, because it believes that the facts have been “misrepresented” that led to this division.
In this new legislature, there are 11 information committees in the Vitoria City Council, the chairmanship of which is traditionally held by the opposition groups, as happened on this occasion.
EH Bildu and Partido Popular had shared the presidencies (6 for EH Bildu and 5 for the PP) after uniting their votes with those of the Elkarrekin Podemos municipal group, while PSE-EE and PNV – who form the government team – abstained .
But this division has drawn criticism from the PNV spokesman in Vitoria City Council, Beatriz Artolazabal, who has assured that “in the first of the opportunities that EH Bildu and the PP have had to negotiate, agree and agree come, have done this”.
After taking note of this response, the PP’s spokesman in Vitoria, Ainhoa Domaica, has denied that an agreement has been reached with EH Bildu and explained that they acted as in previous legislatures, that is say the presidencies are divided among the opposition.
As the PP pointed out in a note, the chairmanship of a committee in the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council means no more than determining the order of debates and the turns of the various initiatives, which in most cases are questions that the opposition formulates the municipal council, in addition to initiatives for citizen participation. It has no executive function nor does it entail any additional fee.
In the last legislature, the presidencies of the committees actually fell into the hands of the three parties: PP, EH Bildu and Elkarrekin Podemos, but on this occasion, when Podemos has only two councilors (before it had three), it cannot chair.
Domaica has said that the criticism of the distribution is due to the fact that “the PNV and the PSOE are very nervous on the last day of the election campaign and are trying to visualize something that is not true”, recalling that the votes of Partido Popular have prevented Bildu – who was the most voted – from ruling in Vitoria,” the people’s spokesperson insisted.
So before the “misrepresentation” today, the People’s Party of Vitoria resigned from chairing the committees, so that the PSE-EE and PNV chair them.
