Authority without leadership – Rising prices: red-blue front against turquoise

Date:

The Federal Competition Authority has been without results and management for more than ten months. Now follows a special session on inflation, initiated by the SPÖ with the support of the FPÖ.

Even if you don’t go to the Beisl, where the schnitzel feels heavy in the stomach even without a bite, everyone who looks at the bill in the supermarket immediately gets dizzy. The government has been struggling for months to find a solution without success. Interventions in the prices are excluded, certainly not for the ÖVP. Spicy: The Federal Competition Authority (BWB) has been analyzing price developments in the food industry for more than ten months.

Top price guards fail because of politics
It could start proceedings in the cartel court and should have produced results long ago about the possibility of possible price regulation. But, as the “Krone” recently reported again, she has been without a line for more than a year. Turquoise and green can’t agree – despite the recommendation of a committee of the Secretary of Labor.

A classic case of poker with political positions. It regularly rains criticism – not only from the opposition, but also from independent bodies. The SPÖ is now convening a special session with the support of the FPÖ. The application has been received – the meeting must take place within two weeks. After the many hot air debates on partly abstract levels in recent times, it becomes concrete with a really hot topic in the summer. Question: “Down with food prices, down with VAT!” said the SPÖ.

“Is that normal, Mr. Chancellor?”
The driving force is Philip Kucher, the new red club boss. He turns to Karl Nehammer: “Government policy in three sentences: record profits for companies. Record prices for our people. Summer break for the government. Is that normal, Mr Chancellor?” The SPÖ calculates: The daily shopping (micro shopping basket) has increased by no less than 18 percent compared to the previous year. Each household currently spends 500 euros per month on groceries. 1000 euros per year more than in Germany.

The ÖVP is generally skeptical of interventions in markets. In addition, there is no guarantee that measures will also be passed on to consumers as relief.

The FPÖ originally wanted to win over the SPÖ for a special money session. That may still come. But money for groceries has priority.
