FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl does not want to be stopped by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on his way to the chancellery. “He will still learn democracy,” said the blue frontman on the ORF “summer talk” on Monday evening.
A “conspiracy against the population” and an “undemocratic positioning”. With these words, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl rode out against his favorite enemy, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. If the head of state thinks he can avoid becoming chancellor, “he will learn democracy.” In an interview with moderator Susanne Schnabl, Kickl recalled the first black and blue government under Wolfgang Bowl in 2000 that formed a government.
When Van der Bellen refuses to take the oath to a government that has a majority in parliament, he provokes a state crisis. “This is the conspiracy against the people. To say: you can choose what you want, if the system and the elites don’t like it, we will do what we want,” the blue party leader said in the direction of the Hofburg.
Pressure on the FPÖ because of the demand for zero wages
Kickl found less clear answers to questions about the internal party dispute in the FPÖ about the freezing of politicians’ salaries. He blamed the ÖVP for the fact that there was resistance from Upper Austria and Salzburg to his demand for a zero wage round for politicians. As the main coalition partner in these two states, the People’s Party would put pressure on the FPÖ. He called for a freeze on all politicians’ salaries above 15,000 euros gross at the federal and state level.
Kickl was undeterred when it came to climate change, despite the serious environmental catastrophes and proven glacier melting. Here, policy is conducted from above, where “horror scenarios are presented”. “The population is forced to be happy and protected by the so-called elites, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change”. A switch to renewable energy is necessary, but “not at the expense of prosperity”, Kickl said. China and India would seize these opportunities. The result: emissions fall, inflation rises, companies emigrate and prosperity falls.
“Challenging the Politics of the Elite”
The “politics of the elites” must be questioned. “Is everything really so without alternative”, as is claimed? “We’ve already heard that from Corona,” says Kickl. Kickl described the lack of personnel in numerous industries as a result of a failed corona policy. Due to the long closures in tourism and gastronomy, many would have reoriented themselves and are now missing from the labor market.
However, the shortage of skilled labor cannot be solved by immigration. The targeted migration of guest workers is only a “temporary solution”. Labor migration is not a sustainable model. The lack of workers – for example in healthcare – must be recruited through better working conditions and higher wages.
Meeting point such as “Stasi interrogation room”
The beginning of the interview was somewhat oppressive as Kickl compared the small conference room in Parliament to a “Stasi interrogation room”, leading to a long silence.
