Guest Workers Debate – Rauch: Kickl proposal in the style of “colonial masters”.

Date:

Health Minister Johannes Rauch does not believe in temporarily bringing foreign nurses to Austria, as FPÖ chairman Herbert Kickl suggested on Monday during the ORF summer talks.

After meeting Tuesday with his German-speaking colleagues, with whom he wants to recruit foreign nurses, the health minister said: “We have to give these people a perspective on life in Austria.”

“Fair and ethical recruitment of skilled workers”
Ministers from Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Luxembourg emphasize that “fair and ethical recruitment of skilled workers” must be a precondition for bringing nursing staff to the country. In the future, they will discuss best practice models and the legal framework. Foreign workers must be recognized quickly. All five countries are currently understaffed in the nursing and healthcare sector. Austria needs about 76,000 nursing staff by 2030.

Qualified specialists are not guest workers”
To combat the shortage of skilled workers, Kickl wants to bring an old concept to the surface: ‘It used to be called guest workers. That is a wonderful term, we should reintroduce it, because when it is no longer needed, people can go home,” the FPÖ boss said in the ORF “summer talk”.

However, the green minister of health is not enthusiastic about this: “Qualified specialists are not guest workers, whom we, as colonial rulers, bring to Austria for a few years and then send back”.
