The date of Feijóo’s investiture debate places any electoral replay on January 14.
The decision of the President of Congress, Francina Armengol, on September 26 and 27 to investiture debate from the president of the PP, Alberto Nuñez Feijoomoved to January 14, the date of a hypothetical election rerun.
The date of the first investiture vote is critical in case it is necessary to go to the polls again. If the bloc persists two months after that first failed vote and no one succeeds in being sworn in as president, parliament will be dissolved and elections must be held 47 days later.
The positions of the various parties with parliamentary representation suggest that Feijóo will not pass the investiture votes, starting the two-month count on September 27.
If the failure of Feijóo’s inauguration is confirmed, it is predicted that King Felipe VI will move to a second round of talks in which socialist Pedro Sánchez will be able to act as an alternative.
But if he does not receive the necessary support and the blockade continues, the Cortes will be dissolved on November 27 and the election calendar for blockade cases will be launched, which is shorter than the 54 days of a normal election period.
For these cases of electoral recurrence, Congress has already amended the electoral law, setting only 47 days between the call and the holding of elections, as all deadlines for the procedure have been shortened, including the election campaign, which lasts only one week.
Thus, if it is necessary to repeat general elections due to lack of investiture, the elections already have an assigned date: Sunday, January 14, after the Christmas holidays.
