The SPÖ is not giving up in the political dispute over more ATMs in the country. The fact that the Landeshypobank recently announced a half-yearly profit of no less than 51 million euros was grist to the mills of the social democrats.
“It cannot be that bank profits explode, but many Lower Austrians do not even have an ATM in their hometown,” denounced party chairman Sven Hergovich. The Social Democrats demand that an ATM be available in every community. They now support their request with figures from the National Bank: according to these figures, there were 97 municipalities in Lower Austria without an ATM in 2021, which is more than 16 percent. “And since then the situation has not improved, mayors report. We therefore assume that it will now affect even more places,” said the SPÖ headquarters.
ATMs miles away
After all, it is now clear that more than 152,000 people in Lower Austria have to travel kilometers to be able to withdraw cash at any time. Nearly 69,400 citizens have three to five kilometers from their place of residence to the nearest ATM, for another 75,600 it is between five and eight kilometers, and 7,500 people only find an ATM at a distance of eight kilometers or more.
Hergvich is pleased that the FPÖ sees the delivery of cash as a “clear order” to the banks: “But words must now be followed by deeds!”
