Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) is campaigning for the capital to levy a new fee – replacing the ORF state broadcasting fee levied so far. Coalition partner NEOS, however, is sceptical.
With the ORF household allowance, a debate has also flared up about the state fee charged by the federal states for public broadcasting. Until now, Vienna has wanted to maintain this despite new funding, but now Mayor Ludwig is making people sit up with an alternative.

Every cancellation of an income means another form of levy or a reduction in performance, he stressed. “That is also the case in this case. We use these funds in Vienna almost exclusively for cultural purposes, especially for the fund for the preservation of the old city.”
You can quickly carry out renovation projects with it, for example in churches or cultural objects. “Well, I wouldn’t change anything about the current situation, to which the population has become accustomed.” Vienna currently levies a state tax of 5.80 euros per month.

Other countries have already taken steps in the field of ORF taxation. In the future, Styria wants to levy a monthly culture and sports promotion fee of about 4.70 euros, which will then be prescribed as the monthly ORF household allowance. Lower Austria, on the other hand, has already announced that it no longer intends to levy a corresponding fee.
There is no state broadcasting tax in Vorarlberg and Upper Austria. In the other countries, the further procedure has not yet been finalised.
