The number of extreme weather events is increasing worldwide: heat, drought, heavy rain and much more also affect agriculture. Many farmers are struggling with psychological problems as a result of the increasing stress. Rising prices also put farmers under pressure, and they feel it when they sell their products: “The focus is no longer on regionality,” says Irene Neumann-Hartberger in an interview with Jürgen Winterleitner.
The often idyllic depiction of life on a farm rarely corresponds to reality. On the contrary, high entrepreneurial performance, fear for the future, generational conflicts, not to mention the great pressure to meet the increasing demands of society, are part of everyday life in agriculture and forestry. Storms and extreme weather conditions add to the already high burden on farming families.
“are necessary to maintain supply”
Due to climate change, floods or droughts have a direct impact on the food security of millions of people worldwide. Constant weather changes are daily companions for agriculture. “The necessity of this moment is to adapt to these changes as well.” It would be fatal to bury your head in the sand now. “There are changes in many areas and these changes must be accepted,” says the federal farmer, adding: “We will be obliged to maintain the food supply.”
With regard to import pressure, Neumann-Hartberger warns: “If we get too much out of production, we always run the risk of automatically moving in the direction of imports, also in the direction of climate and environmental protection. And who produces where and according to which standards is of secondary importance.”
