The European Commission’s official representative in Vienna, Martin Selmayr, has sharply criticized Austria’s continued gas imports from Russia. He spoke of red-white-red ‘blood money’. On Thursday afternoon he was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Oh my God, 55 percent of Austria’s gas still comes from Russia,” the EU representative said at a discussion meeting in Vienna on Wednesday evening. So Austria is financing Putin’s war and no one is standing on the Vienna Ringstrasse to protest against it.
“Blood money is sent to Russia with the gas bill every day”
“That surprises me, because blood money is sent to Russia every day with the gas bill,” says Selmayr. He understands the energy problems, but Austria is a rich country and, like other countries, can get by without Russian gas.
FPÖ on the palm: “One way to Brussels”
Even before Selmayr was summoned to the Foreign Office, the FPÖ had expressed outrage at Selmayr’s statements. “The minimum is that ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer immediately demand that the Commission fire Selmayr,” FPÖ Secretary General Michael Schnedlitz said in a broadcast. In any case, a ‘libertarian Chancellor Herbert Kickl’ would immediately know what to do: ‘Selmayr could book the one-way ticket to Brussels online today!’
