Batet was chairman of the House of Representatives for the past two terms.
The former president of Congress Meritxell Batetwho held this position during the last two terms, has renounced her membership as deputy and is leaving the frontline of politics.
In a message on the social network: well done and duty fulfilled”.
Likewise, she is “convinced” that “there will soon be a new government of progress led by Pedro Sánchez, who will continue with the progress and reforms that Spanish society needs.”
Batet had been a deputy since 2004 and also served for a year as Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function in the first government of Pedro Sánchez.
The socialist leader is until now a lawyer and professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.
The PSOE won thirteen seats in the July 23 general election in the Barcelona constituency, so Batet’s replacement in Congress would be Ignacio Conesa Coma, who held position number 14 on the list.
