Margarete Schramböck, a former economy minister from the ranks of the ÖVP, is unlikely to accept her mandate in the National Council. According to an APA report, this decision was preceded by lengthy discussions within the party. This should allow Alexandra Tanda, who had already announced her whereabouts, to retain her seat on the National Council.
Elisabeth Köstinger will no longer be a member of the National Council. She will completely withdraw from politics after her successor Norbert Totschnig was sworn in as agriculture minister on Wednesday. Both heads of department are not entitled to continued payment of wages, as they could have accepted the mandate.
Köstinger and Schramböck officially announced their resignation on 9 May. In her statement, Schramböck also thanked ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who had brought her into government. She did not give any further reasons for her departure. She has long been considered a replacement candidate in the ÖVP government squad.
ÖVP had to rebuild the government team
ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer was forced to quickly reorganize his government team. He handed over the economy to Labor Minister Martin Kocher – and was given new strength by Norbert Totschnig and the Secretaries of State Florian Tursky and Susanne Kraus-Winkler. Youth State Secretary Claudia Plakolm will also do civil service and voluntary work in the future.
Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen had already sworn these government members into their new positions last Wednesday – just not Totschnig, because the appointed Minister of Agriculture had tested positive for Corona.
