Karner refutes accusation: ‘Landbauer has no idea about police work’

Date:

Because Lower Austrian FPÖ state deputy Udo Landbauer blamed Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) for the lax treatment of environmental activists and described them as an “extended arm of the Greens” in a motion presented to Lower Austria on Thursday Karner responded to the allegations on Wednesday: “Landbauer is clearly still overwhelmed by his role in the state government.” Landbauer has “no idea” about professional police work.

On Thursday, the Blue and Black in the Lower Austrian state parliament will adopt an initiative for a six-month prison sentence for environmental activists and will also take concrete steps. If FPÖ state representative Landbauer had his way, repeat offenders would even be sentenced to a year in prison. Landauer finds sharp words in the motion, especially towards the Minister of the Interior: ‘It is not acceptable that the police, on Karner’s orders, look the other way and do nothing.’

Minister of the Interior responds with facts and figures
“He (Landbauer) has no idea about professional police work,” Karner countered Wednesday, then provided facts and figures. There were 85 reports and 13 arrests during six rallies in Lower Austria: “So we are taking strong action against such chaotic people.” Karner already stated in the spring that he would have the climate glue picked where possible. “Our police have more important things to do than freeing activists from the asphalt,” the Interior Minister continued.

Karner: Landbauer “clearly seriously overwhelmed”
“Vice Governor Udo Landbauer is obviously still very overwhelmed by his new role in government and has no idea about professional police work. It would be time for him to break away from Herbert Kickl, roll up his sleeves, work and not offend the police,” said Gerhard Karner.

A total of 2,600 reports were submitted this year at approximately 180 meetings across Austria. More than 550 activists were arrested.
