Emotional NR session – distrust, arguing – and no resolution over masks

Date:

Emotional session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday: call for new elections for the SPÖ and FPÖ. Applications from the opposition, including after the mask requirement expired, were initially rejected. But resistance in the Chancellor’s Party ÖVP is slowly crumbling.

Sigi Maurer, chairman of the Greens, sprints to the plenary with a smile. Followed by ÖVP counterpart August Wöginger. Don’t miss voting on opposition motions. They will be rejected. About the great excitement: ask about the end of the mask requirement.

Chancellor defends Köstinger and Schramböck .’s dismissal
There is also discussion about the formation of a new government. After the resignations of Elisabeth Köstinger and Margarete Schramböck, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) championed new appointments and restructuring – such as Martin Kocher’s Super Ministry for Economics and Labour.

SPÖ and FPÖ see the government no longer able to act. There is a motion for new elections on the part of the Reds. Club vice Jörg Leichtfried pinpoints failure in the fight against inflation, incompetence in pandemic management. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl: “The government is a flea circus and a traffic artery.” Maurer counterattack: “You’re very full of what you’ve already done in this country.”

ÖVP Mandatary Andreas Hanger on the FPÖ’s vote of no confidence across the federal government: “This includes ministers who have only been in office for one day. That is absurd.” Beate Meinl-Reisinger states succinctly that the government must finally perform. Your NEOS is not thirsting for new elections right now.

Pressure on green ministers is increasing
The Corona issue will certainly remain on the agenda. The pressure on the government to drop the masks is increasing. Resistance also crumbles within the ÖVP, as the “Krone” taught. Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) is required. After all, Austria is the last EU country to make FFP2 masks mandatory.

Experts like the epidemiologist Gerald Gartlehner argue for personal responsibility. “Abolishing the obligation to wear masks is not a ban on wearing them in any case.”
