Minister of Integration Susanne Raab (ÖVP) wants to prepare qualified workers for a stay in Austria before they move. She now said this in Canada, where she also emphasized that Austria has the wrong form of immigration.
Due to the lack of education, this does not close the gaps in the labor market. What is needed is qualified immigration, says Susanne Raab (ÖVP). The Minister of Integration is considering doctors, engineers, but also sectors such as healthcare, gastronomy and tourism.
These people must be prepared in advance for a stay in Austria, the politician said during her current stay in Canada. She cited orientation programs, online German courses and mentoring initiatives as examples. These could start when the future employees and their family members are not yet in the country.
Canada as a role model
The Canadian government is taking a similar approach. Raab met with local Migration Minister Marc Miller in Ottawa on Tuesday to exchange ideas. She criticized the Canadian model of not checking the qualifications of skilled workers hired. In concrete terms, the system is based on self-declaration; in return, immigrants have no steady prospect of getting a job in the profession they learned. However, there are programs that attempt to at least accommodate migrants in related sectors.
The minister can only imagine this in individual sectors in Austria. In short, she believes that the new form of the ‘red-white-red card’ with a 50 percent increase is the right way forward.
Promote supraregional mediation
When it comes to unqualified immigration, the minister wants more supra-regional mediation. It is incomprehensible that a recognized refugee still cannot be placed in Tyrol after two years, even if there is a job for him there. To motivate people to work, Raab would also focus on the level of social benefits. She previously spoke about a waiting period for benefits (see video above).
