Debate over extra income – Karner wants special status for Ukrainian refugees

Date:

Refugees are currently allowed to earn a maximum of 110 euros in order not to fall outside the basic provision guaranteed by the state. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) now wants to raise this additional income limit – but only for refugees from Ukraine. After all, those affected have a special legal position, according to the minister.

Karner stressed to Ö1 “Tomorrow Journal” that this possible model should only apply to the Ukrainian displaced persons. Several NGOs had repeatedly asked for the additional income limit for all refugees to be raised.

Only 30 percent may be kept
Karner wants to distinguish between whether someone lives in a private home or in an organized home. For those who live in a private home, 70 cents must be withheld from every extra euro earned above the tax-free allowance of 110 euros. They get to keep 30 cents. Karner is now calling on the federal states to agree to the proposal.

“Do not mix what should not be mixed.”
The Home Secretary rejects the idea that this should apply to all refugees, as has been repeatedly demanded. You should not mix everything “that should not be mixed”. On the one hand, the war on the European continent, “here we help and here we must help”, and on the other, the renewed strong increase in economic migration.

Refugee of two classes?
Karner also referred to the EU directive for temporary protection of displaced persons, which came into effect after the outbreak of the war and created a special legal position for refugees from Ukraine.

Karner’s proposal is likely to be discussed today at a meeting hosted by refugee coordinator Michael Takacs at the Federal Chancellery. In response to complaints from aid workers and refugees about supply problems, Takacs invited state representatives, relevant NGOs and federal organizations to look for solutions.

NEOS: Austria does not fulfill its obligations
On the occasion of the asylum summit, NEOS MP Stephanie Krisper again criticized that Austria was still not fulfilling its obligations almost three months after the start of the war. If the NEOS have their way, Ukrainian families should at least get bridging support from the family hardship compensation system and be given equal rights as asylum seekers. Then they are no longer dependent on basic facilities, but have access to a minimum income.
