The FNMC elects Alcuaz (EH Bildu) as president, with the votes of the PSN

Date:

He is the first Basque mayor and left Abertzale to chair the Navarre Federation of Municipalities and Councils. For the Tafalla councilor, it is “a new step in the consolidation of the progressive and left-wing majorities in Navarre.”

The mayor of Tafalla, Xabier Alkuaz, from EH Bildu, has been elected president of the Navarra Federation of Municipalities and Councils (FNMC), with votes in favor of the PSN. He is the first Basque president of the FNMC, and also the first of the nationalist left.

The mayor of Tudela, Alejandro Toqueroand the mayor of Barañain, Maria Lecumberriboth from UPN, have been elected first vice president and second vice president, respectively.

Alkuaz secured 755 votes, compared to 443 for Toquero and 40 for Lecumberri. No one has won an absolute majority and the UPN candidates have abandoned a second round of voting.

The new president has highlighted the election of a coalition leader with the votes of the Socialists as “another step in the consolidation of the progressive and left-wing majorities in Navarre“.

Faced with Toquero’s criticism for running for a coalition with few representatives in the south of the regional community, Alkuaz has emphasized that EH Bildu was the first force in the last municipal elections.

The Secretary of the Organization of the PSN, Ramón Alzórriz, explained to EFE that they supported Alkuaz because “we were not prepared to vote for a candidate like Alejandro Toquero, who uses the institutions to confront the government of Navarre”. .

Alkuaz, on the other hand, is willing to “build and collaborate with the government of Navarre on policies that benefit local entities,” and not like Toquero, who is committed to “attacking the government on any issue and wherever then’.
