How much alcohol can politicians tolerate? Many are asking this question after some cases of mayors causing drunken accidents became public.
After two mayors were caught drinking alcohol, politics and alcohol became a hot topic. “The discussion has been going on for years. The subject is of course particularly sensitive in municipal politics, where there are no drivers,” says political expert Thomas Hofer about “Krone”. The big problem: “Many believe that alcohol has something to do with being close to people,” Hofer continued.
Nothing to drink at all
One person who has no problem with that is Nikolaus Prinz, ÖVP mayor of St. Nikola/Donau and member of the National Council. “I don’t drink alcohol because I don’t like it. Everyone knows that and accepted it,” said Prinz. Michael Gruber (FPÖ) relies on self-discipline. “I don’t drink when I’m driving,” he says.
But actually both politicians are unanimous: “It shouldn’t happen, but politicians are just people who make mistakes.”
