The first budget of the new black-blue state government surpasses even the most expensive Corona years! In a negative sense. For 2024, Black and Blue in Salzburg plans new debt of almost 600 million euros, which is expected to drop to 450 million euros over the course of the year. But that would still be a record. There’s also a treat for the taxpayers.
At around 4.3 billion euros, the planned state budget for 2024 is higher than ever before. The new debt of 595 million euros is also a record. By implementation in 2024, this is expected to drop to 450 million euros. “The starting position is a bit difficult. We are not in a very comfortable situation and have incredible spending dynamics in health care, care and childcare,” says Governor Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) about his first budget as finance officer.
Social and caring
Spending on social services and care in particular is increasing sharply, by almost 100 million euros, from 508 to 600 million euros. Ten percent more is planned for housing construction than last year. There are also a number of construction projects such as flood protection in Pinzgau, the renovation of the Schmitten tunnel, the double-track extension of the local railway or the reconstruction of the Pinzgau railway.
Remission of ORF state tax
There is still good news for taxpayers. The state government is waiving the collection of the ORF state levy for 2024. Deputy Governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) describes this as a “monthly relief” for Salzburg. Most recently the tax amounted to 4.70 euros per household and month. However, the government reserves the right to reintroduce it in 2025.
