In Germany, the traffic light coalition was violently rejected. The left-wing dream of red-green-NEOS would no longer work in Austria either. And that especially applies to Herbert Kickl.
Because he can sit back and relax. If such a three-party coalition no longer exists, it will strengthen his position for next year’s negotiations. The story that Herbert Kickl must be prevented will become outdated if the left-wing counter-model does not even have much imagination. And it currently doesn’t.
Remember when traffic lights were the most popular coalition option?
The hope of the left half of the Reich in our country, a traffic light coalition, would not find a majority in the current situation. This is particularly bitter when you consider that the SPÖ could easily have formed a coalition with the Greens and NEOS last year. In fact, a collaboration between the three parties was even the most popular option among Austrians!
What happened is that it doesn’t work anymore
What happened that suddenly no one wants “the traffic light” anymore? Well, the Reds in particular had to lose a lot of voting potential after the constant intra-party feuds. Even if Andreas Babler could ultimately triumph, the traditional party has not yet calmed down and there are no signs of a “boost” in the polls. Babler will have to struggle to build his party. The others are currently pulling away from him.
The story that everything gets better with traffic lights is dead
The fact that in Germany – the traffic light model country – the government parties are in decline and were washed away in the recent state elections in Bavaria and Hesse does not do anything good for the Austrian story that everything will be better with this trio. Who wants to believe in the breath of fresh air from a traffic light when all you have to do is look at the neighboring country to find evidence to the contrary?
“No to Kickl” should also be reconsidered
It may be wiser to keep your feet still in view of the traffic light variant in the election campaign. For many, even after the mess in Germany, this seems more a dangerous threat than a real alternative. And while we’re at it: the rigorous ‘no’ against Herbert Kickl can also be reconsidered. Strategically, this will help him more than the other parties.
