Former Green Party leader Madeleine Petrovic wants to run her own list in the autumn National Council elections. On Friday, she spoke at a press conference about an “inevitable” move as she and the Greens had become increasingly estranged. The main reason they gave was the measures taken during the corona pandemic.
The new list is therefore also committed to learning to deal with the Corona period and an “active peace policy”. “There must be reconciliation,” Petrovic said. People have lost their jobs during the pandemic because of their scientific views, not just as doctors. From the 67-year-old’s point of view, the “mainstream of green politics” has developed in the wrong direction and is “problematic”.
Environmental and animal protection on the agenda
However, environmental and animal protection and social justice are still important to the former federal spokeswoman. On Friday, the new list appeared to be open for discussions with supporters from all political camps. However, it should grow slowly so that full members can be carefully vetted before joining. Mistakes made by other groups should not be repeated.
“We come from the grassroots,” says Monika Henninger-Erber, currently an unregistered city councilor in Grafenegg, who is also on the list. Other members are mainly former Greens who were part of the Green Association for Fundamental Rights and Freedom of Information. To participate in the elections for the National Council in the autumn, 2,600 expressions of support are needed.
Petrovic joined the National Council for the Greens in 1990, was party leader until 1996 and state spokesperson for the Greens in Lower Austria until 2015. According to her own statements, she has now left the party.
