The lehendakari Inigo Urkullu participated in one Basque class at the University of Tokyo, where he answered questions from Japanese students about the culture and history of Euskadi. During his official visit to Japan, the Lehendakari also met with the rector of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS), Kayoko Hayashi.
This university has a lectureship in Basque Language and Culture that was created in 2015 as a result of an agreement with the Etxepare Basque Institute, and has since had 214 students.
After watching the class from a desk, Urkullu stood and answered their questions. The Lehendakari, pending approval, has referred to the new education law to explain this maintains current language models. However, he indicated that it will become clear over time whether they need to be updated.
