In an interview on krone.tv, the renowned Krone journalist and proven political expert Conny Bischofberger analyzes the current trial against ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz with a clear assumption: “Of the witnesses, the most violent statement against Kurz will come from Thomas Schmid. Schmid is indeed a key witness in the trial and must therefore provide the prosecutor with powerful arguments. That is why the ex-chancellor repeatedly denied in the run-up to the trial that he had too close a relationship with Schmid.
“At its core, the process concerns the important question of how high positions are awarded in Austria. Is this done according to transparent criteria or are some top representatives just making it up among themselves,” says Bischofberger, who also knows the ex-chancellor well after several interviews for her book about him.
The current process is just the beginning
However, the WKStA must be accused of taking far too much time to clarify the allegations against suspects. Overall, the current process would only be the beginning of a longer series of processes.
In particular, a possible prosecution in the ‘leg scraping tool’ case, which will reveal whether taxpayer money was used to pay for research data on Kurz, would likely have significantly more serious consequences than the current trial, which ‘only’ concerns a possible false statement in the parliamentary U-committee.
In the video above you can see many more details, such as which witnesses could be particularly dangerous for Kurz.
