The leader of the Socialist Youth (SJ) Alsergrund in Vienna is threatened with expulsion from the party. The reason is membership of the Marxist association “Der Funke” or participation in a demonstration of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The leadership of SJ Vorarlberg had previously experienced a similar situation.
“The rejection of the State of Israel, but also the communist ideology, cannot be reconciled with social democracy,” said Christopher Maurer, director of SPÖ Alsergrund. “Der Funke”, of which the leadership of the SJ Alsergrund (9th district of Vienna, note) is a member, is an independent association and is represented with members and flags at numerous demonstrations and other events. Many of its members are simultaneously active in different SPÖ organizations.
According to the “Kurier”, the leadership of SJ Alsergrund also took part in a demonstration of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Now the people are threatened with exclusion from the party. “Every member, activist and sympathizer of Funke who does not voluntarily leave the party will be threatened with a general expulsion process,” said chairman Martin Halder. The spark would simply speak out against the oppression of the Palestinian people.
“Will not leave voluntarily”
The majority of Socialist Youth is Marxist and would support Funke’s position. It was said that they “certainly would not leave voluntarily” and would “fight for any exclusion.” Recently, sharing a social media post from SJ Vorarlberg caused a stir. They had shared a statement from Funke on the war in the Middle East, which spoke of hypocrisy and a defense of the Gaza Strip.
The two officials responsible must now be expelled from the party. The SPÖ also announced that it would freeze annual funding of 3,000 euros.
