Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will fly to Israel on Wednesday. Various sources reported this unanimously on Tuesday. He will fly together with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
The Federal Chancellery announced on Tuesday afternoon that it was a “sign of solidarity with the Israeli people.” Nehammer meets with Israeli President Yitzhak (Isaac) Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He will also meet with the family of an Austrian-Israeli hostage kidnapped by the terrorist organization Hamas.
“Expressing a clear condemnation”
The Chancellor met with Israeli Ambassador David Roet on Tuesday to discuss the current situation. “We stand firmly on Israel’s side and the Israeli people can rely on Austria. There is no justification for Hamas’ brutal and barbaric terrorist attack on Israel and we express this clear condemnation with our visit tomorrow.”
Nehammer did not meet Herzog until early September in Vienna. The conversation between the two politicians included anti-Semitism and Jewish life in Austria. “Relations between Israel and Austria are characterized by mutual trust and respect,” the Chancellor said at the time.
Several visits from European politicians
Nehammer and Fiala are not the first European politicians to travel to Israel since the war broke out on October 7. For example, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were already there to get an idea.
So far, more than 7,000 have died
It is said that more than 7,000 people have been killed in the Middle East war so far, including four Austrian-Israeli dual nationals. Another is still missing. Hamas has also kidnapped more than 220 people as hostages in the Gaza Strip. The figures cannot be confirmed.
