Three years after the terror, government leaders laid wreaths in Vienna

Date:

On Thursday, the government leadership commemorated the victims of the terrorist attack in the center of Vienna three years ago on November 2, 2020. Two wreaths and candles were laid in front of numerous armed police and soldiers.

In addition to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor, Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner, Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (both ÖVP), Minister of Justice Alma Zadic (Greens), Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) took part. to the meeting. the memorial event.

A joint statement from Nehammer and Kogler said: “Commemoration means remembering all those who were killed or injured in this senseless act of violence. Because despite all the suffering that terrorists can cause, they will never achieve their goal. Our free, democratic and liberal society is stronger than terror.”

Even today we see attempts by those “who want to divide our society and provoke violence. We see those who want to play against each other and stir up hatred to create a heated atmosphere,” the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor emphasized.

“Violence and terror are never justified”
This is a sad reality, especially on social media, where terrorist organizations and hate preachers think they have it easy. “But we don’t give them a chance. Austria stayed together in the most difficult times and will continue to do so in the future,” said Nehammer and Kogler. Violence and terror should “never be put into perspective or even justified”.

‘Don’t let hate divide us’
Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen also commemorated the victims. Just like last year, he gave the first names of the victims on Twitter (X) and wrote: “We are thinking of: Gudrun. Nedjip. Qiang. Vanessa. Those who risked their lives and health to protect others back then defended us all. Everything that Austria is, what we believe in and what we stand for. We will not allow hatred to divide us.”
