Despite repeated criticism, Socialist Youth (SJ) Vorarlberg continues to share events such as pro-Palestine demonstrations on its digital platforms. ‘What can communists do to liberate Palestine?’ she wondered on Friday, for example. Behind this is a discussion group of the Marxist movement ‘The Funke’.
“The Palestinian people have been oppressed for decades. There will be no solution to his liberation under capitalism (…). Come to our event and discuss how we can achieve this goal,” reads the text about the Funke event shared by the Socialist Youth Vorarlberg. She has given hashtags such as #freepalestine and #palestinesolidarity.

The youth organization’s posting not only generated hearts, but also critical and exaggerated reactions. “Do you also share the Hamas videos of them killing children? If so, dear comrades,” wrote one user, for example. On Instagram, the SJ Vorarlberg was accused of, among other things, hatred of Jews.
Called for pro-Palestinian demonstration
The Socialist Youth should already be used to criticism of their reports on the war in the Middle East. About a week ago she called for a demonstration in Bregenz for solidarity with Palestine, which was also supported by, among others, “Der Funke”. Shortly afterwards, photos of the event and a text about it followed on the Instagram account. There is talk of a ‘war by Israel against the Palestinian people’ and a ‘revolutionary perspective in the Middle East and also in Austria’.

“The Funke” is a Marxist movement within the labor movement and pursues the goal of a socialist revolution. The world must be freed from capitalism and the current social order must be overthrown. Activists are always present at demonstrations and meetings, for example to sell their magazines.
Complaint about ‘character assassination campaign’
Since the start of the war in the Middle East, the Socialist Youth of Vorarlberg has regularly caused a stir with its messages. As reported, two responsible officials will be expelled from the party. In addition, annual financing of 3,000 euros was frozen, the SPÖ announced. Sharing a statement from “Der Funke” was primarily responsible for this. For example, the expression ‘bloody revenge’ was used for the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
However, the SJ Vorarlberg did not deter from publicly taking the same position. “It should not be a taboo to show solidarity with a suffering people,” the report said. The youth organization called on social media to write emails to the SPÖ Vorarlberg against the announced exclusions. Many have already done so, but the battle is not over yet.
Sufficiently distinguished from Hamas?
She also shared a letter to the editor of Funke. “Austrian politics under the leadership of ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer is not above implicitly adopting anti-Semitism in some solidarity with Palestine,” it said. It is a “witch hunt against the top” and a “character assassination campaign.” The SJ Vorarlberg has clearly distinguished itself from the ideology and methods of Hamas.
