The domino effect continues: after Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Slovenia expanded the border controls introduced at the beginning of October, the Austrian police will also continue to control the Slovak border.
The focus of the measures is on the fight against human trafficking, the report said. Since checks began on October 4, police have arrested 19 smugglers at the Slovak border and stopped around 180 people entering the country illegally, the Interior Ministry said. Border controls with the Czech Republic were extended by twenty days on October 28.
Karner: ‘Police must be faster than the smugglers’
“The police must be faster than the smugglers. That’s why we started checking border points before smugglers change their routes. The numerous arrests show that the fight against these criminals is successful,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).
In addition to border controls with the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the police have also been carrying out checks at the Hungarian and Slovenian borders since 2015, here together with the Federal Army.
