The Minister of Culture and Language Policy, Bingen Zupiria, presented this Wednesday his department’s draft budget for 2024, which will amount to 369.4 million euros.
Next year, the Basque Government’s Department of Culture and Language Policy will have a budget of €369.4 million, which will, among other things, promote audiovisual production in Basque in the cultural field and support free programs for learning and improving skills in the Basque language.
The Minister of Culture and Language Policy, Bingen Zupiriapresented this Wednesday, in an appearance of more than two hours before the Committee on Economy and Finance of the Basque Parliament, the draft budget of his department for 2024, which will amount to 369.4 million euros next year.
The budget of the Deputy Ministry of Language Policy will increase next year by 3.6 million euros and amounts to a total of 77,194,169 euros. In his appearance before the Basque Parliament, Zupiria stated that 2024 “will be an important year in the field of language policy”.
Zupiria has announced that the new thing will happen in the coming months ‘Action Plan for the Promotion of the Basque Country’ (AROA). Moreover, he recalled that the adoption of the new decree for the standardization of Basque in the public sector of Euskadi is planned, which will determine the direction of language policy for the next ten years.
More than half of the Language Policy budget, a total of 51,676,000 euros, goes to HABE. Zupiria explained that the Basque government will continue to strengthen free access to learning Basque “in response to one of the biggest commitments made by the legislature.”
In the academic year 2024-2025, a new call for subsidies will be launched for acquiring the communicative competence that matches the ‘A1’ level. To ensure that registration for these courses is virtually free, a provision of 1,600,000 euros is also planned.
The ministry has increased the call for development and production in the US audiovisual field, with a total of 5.7 million euros. The EITB budget will strengthen the commitment to audiovisual productions in Basque and in 2024 this year’s additional two million euros will be consolidated for the production of series in Basque. Likewise, EUR 5.1 million will be allocated to further develop the ‘Primeran’ platform.
Moreover, the contribution was received by the Durango Scholarship in the literary field it will increase by 175,000 euros. In the field of literature, a new scholarship is being created, focusing on Basque authors. This scholarshipwill be named after Xabier Lete, will be published annually and will be developed in collaboration with the BBVA Foundation. The total amount is 70,000 euros and is intended to enable a literary author to fully devote himself to his creative work.
