Fortunately, the signal was quickly given: the researchers are now working at full speed. But who could be behind the bomb threat?
When asked by Krone, terror expert Nicolas Stockhammer assures us that traces are currently being followed in all directions: “It currently appears that there may also be traces abroad.” A well-informed source from the Ministry of the Interior also suspects at the ‘Krone’ that the perpetrators come from abroad and simply want to cause unrest in Vienna.
‘Terror group’ wanted to ‘clean for IS’
At the same time, the threatening letter is also carefully examined by the researchers for language and form. Because this is exactly where there are some inconsistencies. The letter states that the “terrorist group Corleone” wants to carry out a “purge of the Viennese schools” for the Islamic State by November 10.
“My personal, still speculative assessment is that due to the language, the letter may have been translated into German or created using artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT.” It certainly makes me suspicious. The unusual wording in particular is a mystery. “Especially because supporters of Islamic State would hardly lower the word ‘state’,” says Stockhammer.
“More than a stupid joke”
In any case, the terror expert is certain that the mysterious threatening letter was more than just a joke. However, there is no reason to panic: “I want to emphasize that the situation is under control. My impression is that we are currently working calmly and with a sense of proportion.”
There is currently no clear picture of who is behind the bomb alarm, but Stockhammer said the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is conducting intensive investigations. “So far, we are probably still in the realm of speculation and suspicion when it comes to authorship.”
The heightened terror alert level 4 has been in effect throughout Austria since mid-October. The executive power remains fully present on the streets.
