Five people were killed in a collision between a train and a small truck in southeastern Hungary on Tuesday morning. Despite the stop signal, the driver of the low-loader simply drove through the intersection.
The train was en route from Szentes to Hodmezövasarhely. Shortly before 7 a.m. there was a fatal accident near Mindszent. The impact derailed the train and ended up in a ditch. According to the Hungarian Railways MAV, there were 22 passengers on the train. According to reports, a total of seven people were in the small truck, which was also thrown against two light poles after the impact. They were on their way to work.
Five people in the pickup died on the spot
Five of the occupants died at the accident site, two were taken to hospitals with serious head injuries, Hungary’s MTI news agency reported.
Several fire brigades and civil defense were deployed. The salvage and cleaning work is expected to last until Wednesday. The route will remain closed until then.
