Alarming study – two-thirds of hospital doctors want to quit

Date:

The personnel situation in the Viennese clinics is tense. It could soon get worse, according to a survey of doctors. Most are thinking about leaving the hospital.

The third part of the survey of nearly 2,000 Viennese hospital doctors is devoted to the future of the healthcare system – and this is extremely worrying: 91 percent of those surveyed do not expect an improvement in their workload. 90 percent understand that nurses are quitting in hospitals. However, the really bad news for the Viennese population is that two-thirds (67 percent) of doctors think about leaving the hospital repeatedly, often or constantly.

Pollster Peter Hajek said sentiment may have deteriorated again in recent months since the September survey. “If the Viennese city council does nothing now, the hospitals will soon be empty,” says Stefan Ferenci, vice president of the Vienna Medical Association, the result.

And where do doctors want to go?
According to the survey, nearly half (48 per cent) aspire to a future as a GP of choice, while only 22 per cent can envision a position as a panel physician. “The public health system is becoming increasingly unattractive to workers. Colleagues are tired of having to process patients on the assembly line. More time for people, that’s what all healthcare workers want,” says Ferenci. According to the vice president, that would also be feasible, because “there is enough staff there.” The Vienna health organization (WIGEV) is to blame for the staff shortage. receives a damning certificate from his employees, should think about what he can do to keep the employees,” says Ferenci.

He cites paediatrics and youth medicine as an example, where the staff shortage is particularly striking. The number of doctors has increased by about 36 percent in the past ten years. So where are they? At least not in hospitals or cash registers.

Crisis talks about the situation in the hospitals
The city should now have realized the seriousness of the situation. On Tuesday, a one-on-one meeting took place between Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and the president of the Vienna Medical Association, Johannes Steinhart.
