Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has indirectly criticized the government’s Schengen veto. This debates with the migrants arriving in Austria. “However, these migrants do not come from Bulgaria and Romania, but from Hungary,” Van der Bellen said on Thursday.
“I believe that the government should also better protect its investment interests, and not only in the financial sector,” he continued. Austria is a homeland for investors in both countries. “Let me add that tens of thousands of Romanian women work in our country and care for the elderly and the sick day and night,” Van der Bellen said on Thursday during a meeting with foreign correspondents.
Citing the large number of irregular migrants on the Balkan route, the Austrian government is blocking the extension of the border-free Schengen area to Romania and Bulgaria.
Since then, government leaders of other countries and the NEOS have repeatedly called on Austria to give up its veto. To join, the consent of all member states is required. The Netherlands is also not in favor of it. However, the Austrian government has approved Croatia’s accession.
