Refugees in the country: – Only under Kickl did more people receive basic care

Date:

There are slightly more refugees in the country receiving so-called basic care – so far this figure has only been higher under former Interior Minister Herbert Kickl (FPÖ). The number of refugees leaving Austria has increased significantly this year. In the first ten months this was 25 percent more than in the same period last year.

A response from the Ministry of the Interior to Liberal MP Hannes Amesbauer shows that the number of people receiving basic care via the asylum route is increasing slightly. In September, almost 19,000 asylum seekers, more than 3,200 asylum seekers and almost 10,300 people entitled to subsidiary protection were in this shelter.

Largest primary care group from Ukraine
That’s about 4,000 more than at the same time last year. The last time there was a higher value was in 2018, when Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) headed the interior department. Although the number of asylum seekers and those entitled to subsidiary protection was similar to this year, the number of asylum seekers receiving basic care was significantly higher: approximately 32,000 people. Naturally, the largest group currently receiving basic care does not consist of asylum seekers, but of displaced persons from Ukraine.

A quarter of additional refugees were deported from the country
According to current figures from the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 10,478 deportations took place between January and the end of October, of which 5,496 were voluntary (52 percent) and 4,982 were forced departures (48 percent).

This is a 25 percent increase in deportations from the country compared to the previous year – with asylum applications falling by almost 50 percent in 2023. Last year, 8,403 people were deported from the country in the first ten months.

One in five with a criminal conviction
In cases of forced deportations from the country, more than 45 percent of people have a criminal conviction (21.6% of total deportations from the country). According to its own information, the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum (BFA) continues to focus on increasing the number of people being deported from the country.

In addition to numerous individual returns, a total of six charter returns have been made in the past two weeks. A total of ten Dublin charter repatriations have been carried out to Bulgaria in 2023, as well as seven to Romania and Croatia.
